Kidding aside, it comes downyour needs.
I'd go for the 4x4 per the comments above....but have to tell you I just got back from Costa Rico,,, spent a full day in the forest and botanical preserve with all kinds of hills, rock climbs and rocky trails, river crossings, sand washes, etc. ..mostly on an older beat to crap Yamahahahahaha 250 2WD. As long as the revs were kept about double idle speed or higher, that little quad took it all in stride. Had it been wetter, the 4wd would have been nicer, but I was very impressed with that little motor and 2WD.

If you know how to handle a 2wd then thats fine for what you want to do. Grew up with a 2wd 300 and knew how to work it but let me tell ya 4wd is great!

I have an 05 Honda recon 2wd so I'm very biased. I love mine and it goes through some unbelievable crazy mess. I like it because its really lightweight and it will go through some of the stuff that the bigger 4wd have trouble with. It all boils down to what kind of terrain you're going to be in. If it gets nasty up where you hunt the added power might keep the noise down whereis you might have to hammer on the recon a bit.

Also, unless you're hooked on buying new, I picked my 06 up 2 years ago for 2k, thats about half price after tax and all their fees. It was MINT to say the least about it..... and those air cooled hondas do not die, so you would have nothing in the motor to worry about. You would be surprised what kind of hauling that lil thing can do,.... I know I was! |

I would say you should get a rancher or a foreman but if you get a recon witch don't get me wrong still capable but i would rather have a 4x4 than a 2 wheel drive a rancher or foreman will help you get out deep and the woods yourself me being a hunter and having a rancher i love it just my opinion.

Years ago I got an 84 Honda ATC 200s 3 wheeler, which I used for hunting, both grouse and Deer, in the north woods of Minnesota.
I have pulled out several deer with it and put hundreds of miles on it every year. 2 wheel drive with only 3 wheels.. The nobby tires didn't do all that well in deep mud, and if we had more then a foot of snow it got real hard to steer, but all in all for hunting it did remarkably well. So with that said, I have no doubts that a 2x4 recon 250 would do any worse then my little 200 2x3.. I would compare the price though with other ATV's before deciding. One nice thing about the smaller motors is the gas mileage. My little 200 with it's 3gal. gas tank went so much farther then almost all of the bigger motored 4x4's I drove with.

I currently have a 350 rancher 2x4, which I used hunting last fall, and even though it had bald tires, it performed wonderfully. Yes, a 4x4 would have made it through the clear cut logging area a little easier, but my 2x4 still made it through, wet logs and all. If you have the money for a 4x4 then get it, but if the 2x4 recon is a great deal, I wouldn't pass it up, especially if your weighing the cost or value of the ATV with the actual amount of use you will use it for.

i used to have a suzuki lt160 2wd (when i was a kid) and it hauled deer out ....had to sit on it cuz there was no room, and to keep the frond end on the ground, but it worked, my dad has a 05 rancher and my 450 foreman, use it to take the stands out and in, haul deer, you cant even compare them, i would at least get 4x4, for no more than it costs
