Default ?? after clutch change

After awhile i finally got the clutch changed and replaced. it drove around but two problems or concerns i have...

1. when shifting at higher speeds it doesnt shift well. there is little play in the foor shifter lever. im guessing this is a clutch adjustment on the front crank case. i noticed i cant tighten it and can only loosen it. once loosened it is free spinning off. after looking at it i think i have to loosen the nut then tighten/loosen the bolt/screw.

2. after riding for about 45 secounds i stopped to check out the bad shifting problem and noticed a smell of burning clutch. im hoping it either one because it is new needs to burn the top layer off???? or with the shifter messed up it is riding the clutch.

when in gear the recon was much more responsive to throttle and did not slip!!!

thanks in advanced

Yeah, you're supposed to loosen the nut and adjust the bolt/screw. To adjust, loosen the lock nut and turn the adjusting screw clockwise one turn. Then, slowly turn the adjusting screw counterclockwise until you feel resistance. Now, turn the adjusting screw clockwise 1/4 turn and hold the adjusting screw while tightening the lock nut.

Also, did you soak the clutch discs in oil before installing them?

I didnt adjust it at all.
I did not soak the new disc in oil before i installed. could this be the reason it is burning?

thanks for the help. do i just keep adjusting the clutch until it feels right and shifts smoothly? im guessing the disc will eventually saturate themselves as its driven.

i added 1 quart and then 3/4 of a quart of oil so the level should be fine.

no, take the nut on the front case, loosen it. then screw it in till there's slight tension. then back it out 1/4 turn. then tighten lock nut

It seems kind of odd you're smelling the clutch when it immersed in oil. You sure you don't have a brake shoe dragging somewhere ?
Once you get the problems with the clutch ironed out, you should change your oil to get rid of the burned particles if that's the case.

the burning smell is no longer an issue, it was a brake drum. but after adjusting like instructed it shifts up to 2nd gear fine but wont shift beyond that unless at idle. it will not shift down once up with out being at an idle. shifts into reverse fine.
