Default What is a good price?

I am looking to buy a 2001 Honda Recon. It has a problem with the gearshift it is foot shift and the shifter seems to be tight but won't "catch" any gear so probably splines stripped or just need new shifter. It also has been sitting for not quite two years and some how most of the oil leaked out of it I'd imagine a bad gasket somewhere. It is a good friend of mine's and I have drove it a before the shifter broke and it ran really good. Just looking for some input on what some potential problems may be and what I should pay for it. I like to tinker with stuff have pretty good mechanical knowledge and would like to buy it just to fix it but don't want to be stuck with some thing that will never run again. Just looking for a little advice. Thanks in advance.

to the forum.....The oil issue is what I'm thinking about. The rest is pretty simple. Clean the carb, check the brakes and cables, fuses, battery and connections. Good luck.

Thats what was concerning me iv worked with recons before, my grandpa has two a 1999 and a 2000 and they have never had any problems like that. The oil issue seem to be a bad gasket but ill need to get it up to look under it.

I talked to him yesterday and they said 1100 obo I almost laughed but since we have been good friends for a long time. I was thinking like 300-500 dollars. But if they are set on 1100 im not going to low ball them. They said they were going to take it to the Honda shop and i know that is not going to be cheap. I would rather buy it as is cheap and take the risk.

Ya thats what I was thinkin i wouldn't pay more than 500 for it I think he think its just going to fire up. Its goin to need a major "tune up" and then it might run good.

I think the $500-600 range would be pretty good under the circumstances. I paid $1200 for one in really good condx and that was a little on the high side...by the time you do everything necessary to get it running good you will spend another 200-300 on it.
