Default 2001 Recon loose shifter no grab on gears

I have 2001 Honda Recon and the gear shifter has become loose somehow and will move up and down it isn't sloppy buy it will not "grab" onto any gears it just goes up and down without doing anything. Wondering if anybody has any insight on how to fix it or if it just needs a new gear shifter? I have already tried to tighten it.

It seems to be tight enough to me. It seems as if it were stripped out or something i believe it has splines that may go bad on these models?

Look at the end of the shaft while trying to shift the foot shifter. If the foot shifter moves without the shaft turning, the splines are stripped. That is, if the bolt is tight. If the splines on the shaft aren't in real bad condition, you might get by with just a new foot shifter, but if the splines are worn off, you will need the foot shifter and a new shifter shaft.

I was wondering if anybody had any insight on replacing the oil seal that surrounds the gear shift spindle.
