My atv sat for about 4 years without running (its a 2001 recon). the fuel tank was never emptied. The fuel turned orange. Anyways I am working on my atv and trying to get it running. The bottom of the fuel tank has some crap on it and was wondering if anyone can suggest a way to clean it. I dont want that stuff to get into the engine.

thanks

Just flush it, put some fuel in it and shake it around and dump. Add an in line fuel filter to the gas line to be safe.

Filter is a great idea. May be spray carb cleanerin the tank also may help?

See if you can get some Stoddard Solvent at maybe Lowe's, Home Depot or a paint supply store. Put some of that into the tank and keep sloshing it around. Let it set overnight and then drain or dump it out. Stoddard is a mild solvent and won't hurt the tank since it's a Naphtha cut off a distillation column. It might take 2 or 3 attempts, but it should do the job for you.
And if that orange crap is in the bottom of the tank, you can safely assume it's all the way into the carb.
