I think like a car, you may need a switch that activates in reverse. I was thinking of putting brake lights on my 02 450es. My idea is electical and yours I think is machanical. Meaning, my idea would work off brake switches(adding switches to the levers). Your idea would work off the trans and switch to lights. Give me a day or two and I will find out what you need to do to make this happen. GREAT IDEA!!!!!

On my 400 the switch for the dash reverse indicator light is mounted in the base of the motor. Your bike probably uses a similar setup. This switch actually completes the ground for the circuit , not the positive side. I was worried that the stock wiring for the dash light would not handle the load from the 55 watt light I installed as a reverse light so I used a relay to power this light directly from the battery.

The negative side of the relay coil (ground side) is wired to the reverse switch on the engine. I wired the positive side of the coil to the headlight circuit. This way the reverse light I installed will come on when I shift into reverse, but only if the headlights are on.

My brother's sportsman has factory reverse lights that they actually call "work lights". They are turned on with switch on the dash. This is an easier way to install them but not near as good as having them come on automatically when you shift into reverse. Most of the time he forgets to turn them off after using them.

The brake lights are also easy to install. If you search this forum you should be able to find the post on this topic that actually lists the honda factory part numbers for the handle bar switches you need. For the light I just added a center mounted LED light with both running and brake lights. This is easier than trying to get the double contact bulbs in the stock taillights.

These are both very useful mods. Hope they work out for you.

If you want brake lights on your honda, here is how I installed mine .

I wanted the micro switches for the hand brake levers, I got the part numbers from a Honda dealer microfiche.
The switch p/n is 35340-ML4-005.(needed 2 of them 1 for each hand brake @ $11.17 each)
Also needed was...
1 stop switch collar p/n 35345-HF1-830 ($3.78)
1 screw-washer (4x20) p/n 93893-04020-07 ($.55)
1 screw-wasger (4x14) p/n 93893-04014-07 ($.50)
I am too cheap to pay the $100 plus for the "Honda Brakelight Kit" and have already run the wiring and added a "brake light"(actually two side marker lights bolted to my trunk door, or next to it.) All told it has cost less than $35.00 this way.
I have done 2 Recons(97&2000), 1 Rancher(2001), and 1 Foreman 450es(2004) with these parts. There is also a foot brake switch available, but I have not ordered it or installed it yet.

Note: I have only found the "Honda Stop Lamp Kit" listed for the "97-98" Recon and it says "Maine Only" on the microfiche.
I hope these part numbers will help others.
With these part numbers any Honda dealer should be able to order them. (I have ordered from 2 different dealers) If anyone needs to know who I ordered these parts from P/M me and I will send you the name and phone number of the dealer.
Here are some pic's of the switch install. You may have to register,(free), and sign in to see the pics.
I hope this info will help others.
