I just bought a nice used 2000 Recon to use for maintenance on our dirt bike trails. Everything seems fine and I have already changed the oil and serviced the rear end. I see where the manual mentions an oil filter and oil screen that need maintenance, but there is no explanation of how or where they are located. I also checked today and one forum said the Recon had no filter, but it did have an oil screen that should be serviced by a dealer. Is this true, or can I clean it? I've cleaned many of these on my KTM dirt bikes and I'd like to be able to do it myself if possible. With that in mind, here are my questions:

1) Where is the oil screen? (There is a 1" cap with a large allen wrench up higher on the rear left side of the motor and that looks like the only access to the internal engine without removing a case, etc. Is the screen behind that?)

2) Can I clean it, or is there some trick or special tool needed?

3) Is there an oil filter and if so where is it located?

I'll be glad to take it to a dealer if needed, but I sure would like to maintain it myself?

Thanks for your help and advice!!!

to hondaforeman.com JCW. I know what you mean about fixin it yourself, Im the same way. Dont know much about recons but I can recommend getting a service manual for it or ask the local honda shop they should be able to tell you where the screen is and if it has a filter. Good luck.

Kipes, thanks for the welcome. It looks like a great website.

I have ordered the manual, but I was wanting to use the Recon this weekend (probably before the manual comes in) and I was hoping to find out if it would be easy to clean the oil screen. I'm sure it's fine like it is, so I'll just plan on riding it and deal with it after the manual comes in.

I was also wondering if there is any service to do to the drive shaft. I didn't see any alemites, etc.

The Recon has an internal screen that doesn't require cleaning unless you happen to be in the motor doing repair work. Changing the oil, clean and oiling the air filter and checking the final drive lube (change if needed) is the basic maintenance.
