Just wondering if the reason that I saw somewhere on here about removing the recoil starter is just due to collecting mud and water(rust) all in side which makes it useless. And if so has anybody tried to seal it up but not forever. Sorry for the format I am a FNG! Thanks

The mud and water is the reason, once it gets trapped in the rope starter housing there is a chance of it making the crankshaft seal go bad and let the water/mud into the motor. You can remove the rope starter assembly and run a bead of silicone around it to form a gasket (it will take a little extra towards the bottom of the case where the drain notch is) and run a bead around the handle and set it in place and let dry.

So you have to take it off, man I just had it off to clean it out just to get the motor to top dead center while me and my buddy did my valve job (20 hrs). I might try to use some clear silicon around the seam and the same for the handle my buddy who is a Honda mech said to also cover the end of the handle because it's hollow too FYI if you had not already done it. Thanks for the reply and advice (toodeep).

I just sealed mine up with silicone. Probably not as good as the delete plate but it was free and is working just fine for me.
