Default smoking winch?

And yes I thought about making this title 'Smoking Wench' to get more replies

Here is the issue that I just noticed about 10 minutes ago when I was about to do the winch saver mod for plowing.

Basically I could freespool line out no problem, I can pull line out with the switch no problem, but as soon as I try to pull the line back in with the swich I start getting smoke that appears to be coming from the wired connection to the winch motor? Nothing stops working, it keeps pulling in the line, but quite a bit of smoke the whole time.

KFI 3K winch, less than a year old, been used for some very light plowing this winter.

any thoughts?

Could also be a bad crimp from the wire to the terminal.

Let's hope there is no class action lawsuit against sspeckerwood.

Since it's only doing it in one direction I'm going to guess the plastic washer/collar (whatever they use in that winch) is broke and the terminal is grounding out with the winch housing. Depending on which direction your using it in the one connector would be either a ground or positive and when it's a positive it's giving the problems.

that seems to be what the problem was, I went back and disconnect it and even though the rubber washer seemed to be fine I put a bigger heavier one on and it seems to be doing good now, although I have a new problem now. Was doing the plow mod and now my loop for the line hook is now wedged up in the spool, so class action could be coming

It is a one year LIMITED warranty, here are the specs if anyone cares

Like I said I'm not sure on your winch but if you can remove the washers and look at it there should be an o-ring (pretty common on the winch motor to help keep the moisture out) or plastic collar or something to keep the post from grounding out even if the lower nut comes loose and it can move around. Easier to put an o-ring on it in the garage than out on the trail after it F-up or filled with water.
