Default cant get it into neutral

my 03 rubicon was sitting in drive for several months when the oil pump chain came off. I just put it back together and there are 2 issues:
1: i cannot get it into neutral.... it will do Drive and Low, but nothing else.
- how do i get it to shift?
2: in low range, it runs great, shifts through all gears and motor runs good.
but soon as i put it in drive, it cant accelerate at all, it struggles to run even. my battery is just about shot, so i'm gonna get a new one, but i'd be suprised if that had anything to do with this.

as a note, i replaced the valve timing chain also, but i'm certain i set the timing right.

any thoughts?

it could be stuck. i used wd40 and rocked the machine side to side and press the button to go into neutral. also drive a few feet forward then try it

Welcome to the forum. My first thought is the linkage isn't hooked up right. Down where it connects to the motor check it while trying to shift it, it might be put on backwards and binding the shift linkage not allowing it to shift.

Thanks everyone for the welcome to forum messages.

So, i put in the new battery, but that didnt change any of the running symptoms.
doesnt look like i can check the engine codes, without it being in neutral... catch 22 here.
As for the linkage, its on right, and not binding. also, the shift mechanism isnt where the problem is. it truely will not rotate past low.

should i tilt it up on one end,,,, or beat it with a hammer??? also, i've drove it around about 10 minutes. runs great in low range. i can let it run automatic or esp, both work fine (since it runs with ESP, that implies that there are no engine codes). soon as i shift to drive, it runs like junk, cant get over 4 mpg in D.

Is it true that these things can have a hard time going into neutral if you leave them sit in geat?

Thanks,,,
Derek

i wouldn't judge it by MPG and no don't beat anything with a hammer.

spray wd40 on the shifter and try again

mph
ok, i've got it working. In my defence, i bought this thing while it was broken.... so i can say it was a learning moment.... I hadnt put the plastic on yet, so i didnt take note that L is actually the farthest forward gear.... so i had the linkage on wrong, and was trying to go from D to L to N... which was completly wrong. I adjusted the linkage so the shifter was all the way forward at L, and now it works great....may my second post not be embarassing

thanks for all of the help and your fast replies.
