Default Honda Project

Hi all,
Newbie here. I am working on a honda Rubicon for my Brother-in-law. I am not even sure of the year, I am thinking around 01, or 02. Its a 500, and it hasn't been ran in probably 3 years, and it sat outside, uncovered. It is in pretty good shape. I drained out as much of the old gas as I could, pulled the carb and the needle was stuck in the seat. Got the needle out and finally got it to run. However, it won't idle. With the choke off, it has a bog when I rev it to keep it running and it backfires and sputters. With the choke on, it sounds good but has a high idle. Where should I go from here.

I don't know anything about Hondas. I have cats. What else should I do to it. I checked the oil and it looked over full, but I think its OK, but not sure if I am reading it right.

I thought that might be the case, I haven't put it all the way back together yet, I was kind of anticipating having to pull the carb again. There isn't any way to screw up the throttle and choke is there? When I pulled the carb I just freed up the needle and checked the main jet for flow. I will check all the rest when I get the carb broken down. I really just wanted to hear it run and make sure it was even worth diving into, but it definitely is. I will have to give the lemon juice a try. Can I throw the whole carb right in there?

if you over adjusted the throttle cable it can make it rev at idel
and yes you will have to disasemble the carb fully to clean it in the lemon juice
everything goes in the pan but the diaphram and the flote

change the oil. the hondamatics are sensitive with oil
and buy a new battery. with all the electrical problems a fresh battery from the start will solve a lot of problems
get a new air filter and spark plug and fresh gas
drill the carb vacuum to gain throttle response

How much oil is needed. Do I fill the pumpkin all the way up like it looks on the dipstick? I will be getting a new battery also, I have been jumping it from my Arctic Cat to get it to turn over. When I get the year, I will post back and try and get the manual from rich450es.

a manual will tell you oil levels. all rub icons are they same mechanical. so any manual will work. the differences are plastic

Hi all,
I couldn't find the sticker on the frame. But I believe it is an 04 after looking at pictures. The headlights are the 04 style, not the 05. My brother in law believed it was an 04 or an 05, so based on that, I am assuming its an 04. I don't have the manual, but I'm sure I can find it. My question on the oil is if I am reading the dipstick right. You know how most dipsticks read at the bottom, this one looks like it reads full at the top. I'm sure you honda guys will know what I am talking about. I am going to change the oil soon anyway.
