Default I think my battery is not getting charged

2002 Rubicon had to have the battery replaced last year. I didn't charge it when I put it on but it worked fine. It sat for about 6 months without being started. Went to start it and the battery was dead. Had it checked and Auto zone said it had a dead cell. Bought a sealed battery and the next weekend It started right up, no problem. Riding across the field I noticed that the headlights were not as bright as they should be. A few minutes later the engine died and would only click when the starter button was pushed. Tried the pull starter and it would start fine as long as the headlights were off. After starting, the engine would die if I turned the headlights on. Where so I start?

Update....I bought a battery charger and a cheap multimeter. Charged battery for a short period and checked with multimeter. Reading 11.46 v not running. Started bike and checked battery reading 11.46 v. So I know the battery is not getting charged. Now where do I start checking and how?

Try fully charging the battery before installing it. Found out after buying a regulator that I didn't need that the charging circuit needs over 12 volts at the battery before it sends charging current. It is designed to maintain a charged battery and not charge a weak one.

Charge your battery up fully, re-install and start it up. Put a mulitmeter on the battery leads and it should be reading over 13 volts, if it isn't then your charging system is not working.
