I'm in the middle of changing the oil on my 2004 Rubicon 500, and when I pulled down the oil filter cap/holder/ whatever you wanna call it, the filter and spring both came falling out. I've heard there's an up and a down on these filters, but I dont see any difference. Also have heard there's a thin washer but there wasn't one on mine. Where's the washer supposed to be. And last but not least, when putting this back in, does the spring go up in there first, then the filter, then the cover? I dont wanna screw this up.

for my 2011 Rubicon the way the filter goes in doesn't matter, it is the same on both sides, ie no up or down. the washer goes at the bottom of the filter towards the bolt, the spring slides right over the bolt, no up or down on that either. You probably did have a washer and is probably still stuck to the bottom of the filter, take a look, if not I would grab one from your dealer.

The washer isn't stuck to the filter. I'm guessing it's gone. When everything fell out, it fell into a big pile of oil dry. So when I put it back together, I put the filter up in there, and the washer goes on the bottom of the filter? correct? And then I slide the spring over the bolt, and put it up in there. right? So from top to bottom it goes filter, washer, spring, cover?

you got it, ya any washer from your local hardware store will do really as long as it covers the rubber on the filter.
