checking oil

Ever since I bought this Rubicon when ever I check the oil I have always started it cold and let it fully warm up. The manual says not to rev the engine or put the transmission in gear.

Is that any different that coming back from a ride, leaving it in neutral and letting it idle for a few minutes and then shut it off??

Just wondering.

no dumb questions. only dumb answers. lol. i think ur gonna be more accurate if you check it before you ride with the motor warmed. i dont think you'd be off by much if you did it after you rode if you gave it a few min. to settle. try both and see if there's a difference

Interesting question: I've always checked the oil cold on the motorcycle and quad.....but warm on the 4 wheeled. Will have to do a test on the moto over the weekend.

its always better to check oil when its warm. oil expands when at operating temp.

Garage
Here's a few pages from the common service manual. The newer motors are considered dry sump engines (holding tank is part of the cases), the older like the 300 are wet sump.

2007 420FM (475cc, 27x12x12 Mudbugs) ---------- 1995 300FW (webcamshaft, 350 rear end)
2008 420FE (26x9x12 BearClaws) -------------------
1988 300 (old stock machine, nothing fancy)
2009 420FA (25x8/10x12 BearClaw HTR) ---------
1987 350D (work in progress)

thanks toodeep, I have never checked it immediately after letting it idle. I will this morning.

I have an OE manual and I have it on disc. I could have looked it up and read it again but this is soo much more fun.
