My 2004 Honda ForeTrax Foreman Rubicon (only 300 miles!) produced a loud click noise from the engine when I tried to re-start it within minutes after a 5-mile ride. Eventually, I determined it would not start because the engine was ceased up. My authorized mechanic explained that that flywheel bolts loosened/spun off - flying into the stator and windings...apparently because there was no Loctite used. Please see pics below:

Does anybody know if Loctite is normally applied to Honda flywheel bolts? I called Honda, but nobody I reached could tell me.

THANK YOU!

We use both red (high strength) and blue (medium strength) on Honda Engines .. On flywheel one-way clutch we use red ..

That makes sense to me, and my mechanic. My mechanic also mentioned that he had seen Loctite used on the flywheel bolts of other brands of ATVs, but that he did not know if it was used on Honda because he had never seen such a problem with a Honda before.

Just wondering, have you seen Loctite on Honda factory installed fly wheel bolts? or do you apply it after the fact when you're working on the engine?

Also, have you seen this problem before? Is it a common or unusual problem from your prospective?

Thank you kindly!

It's an unusual problem, I've seen it once on a 450. Yes the factory bolts will have loctite on them, you can see the residue when taking them apart.

That is what I was wondering - THANK YOU VERY MUCH for the confirmation!

Now I'm wondering, with the 450, did other bolts start to come undone too? I'm wondering if the Loctite dispenser could have run empty and was not refilled during assembly? I'm guessing they are assembled largely by robotics.
