Hello,

I am thinking of getting a Rubicon, still on the fence weather to get a new one, or a used one.

Is there any years with problems, or recalls that I should watch for or avoid?

What year had the 2wd to 4wd feature added (I think it was 2003, please clarify)?

I know 04 to 05 was a change, including front drum to disc breaks, and plastic, any other major changes in that transition?

In a comparison to a TRX500FM, which has a peppier trail manor? This will be strictly for trail riding, and I like to ride spirited, but have mud and snow to contend with, so a 2wd sports bike is not a solution for me, and I like Honda for the quality and reliability. I know they are not the fastest or biggest, but my current 400AT rancher runs with the big boys now, I just want more power (would like to run a set of Tatou tracks in the near future in the snow)!!

Thanks Chad

Welcome to the forum. 05+ would be the years of Rubicons you will be after. They have the in/out for 4x4 plus updated transmission and oil pumps. The Rubicon has the full auto mode plus the ES mode for when you want to go through the gears yourself.

The Rincon kind of sounds like it might be a bike to consider also. They are more on the sportier side than the utility.

I have the 04 Rubi. Drum brakes and all time 4x4 are the downside of this year and older. 05' and up has the 4x4 select built in and disk brakes up front. My bike has the Warn 424 kit and a disk brake conversion kit that makes up for those issues, but it will cost you almost $600 to get it there. If it is close in price go with 05 and up, if you find an 04 dirt cheap, you can get it and add the 424 and brake kit and maybe still come out ahead on $$$$.
