Tires

I am sure there are 1000s post on tires and apologize to those who take offence to me asking a simular question again.

Just finished a mini rebuild on a new to me 2005 Honda Rubicon. Bike currently has itp mud lite tires where the back have 85% thread and the front maybe 10%. Original owner said they were added at the same time, the alignment was roughly an inch and a qtr off and think he drove pave a lot so not scared to try mud litres based on the front wear.

Original plan was just replace the two front with two new mud lite's but then I got to thinking. If I put on two mud lite xl's in the front by the time the backs wear down I could getaway with replacing two tires every 4 years instead of 4 tires at once. If the front do wear quicker this may be a better match as well?

Now I am thinking 4 new tires. The bike will primarily see personal land use that will be manurving through a lot of chopping style terrain. There are are a lot of springs on the land so mud will exist but rarely will more the two tires get into deep mud at the same time.

Tires I have used on my honda 350 in the past were bear claws and itp 589s. Liked the bear claws and loved the 589s but do not think they are made anymore. Right now I am thinking 4 25" xls or 4 26" bear claws. Thinking the bigger bear claw for the extra lug. Any advice on which tire to choose or a tire I should consider that I may not be thinking or now about?

Look at the bearclaw htr, 8 ply radials that outperform the originals.

Thank you for the side by side shots and the htr suggestion. Like the look of them and great reviews but may be a little more then I want to spend. The photo of the mud lites, was that AT's or XL's?

Any thoughts on Mud Bugs?

That is the at and all are 25 inch and unmounted. Mudbug are one of my most favorite tire. They do everything good and seem to wear good. I've had mine since 08 on many different machines and they still have good tread. Mine doesn't see much road driving though. Mud, water, sand and hard pack trails.

Yeah my vote on htr's also. Bought a set 3 years ago and absolutely love them. They run big also so I would do the 25's as they actually measure 26" or so.

I do like them and the 299 Bear Claws I had on my 350 served me well before I replaced them with ITP 589's.

Problem is $. This started out as picking up a bike I am $1300 into with the pairs and purchase but turned out to be in much better shape all around with a little elbow grease! The tires on it now are mud lites and the back have about 5/8 thread left so are in good shape. The fronts were warn down maybe 1/8 left on them and was only going to replace the front, which the wife was not sold on but have a birthday coming. Now in classic me fashion I am looking at replacing all 4 but $$ matters.

Smart thing for me to do is just replace the fronts, that would be more then enough for the type of riding I will do 95% of the time. The man in me though is growling for the 5% of the time!!

I use a set of ITP Mudlites that are about down to 15%. Htr's and Itps are both good tires your pretty much good either way

As an update I got my tires. Found a set of used Titan 589s on rims at what I feel was a great price. I loved my ITP 589s and was very compfortable buying them for this bike!
