Yup, that's what my local shop wants for my 2001 Rubicon Foreman TRX500FA to change out the angle sensor:surprise:. Charging me $140.00 for the sensor and $5.00 for the o-ring, then an hour for diagnostic and another hour to do the job @ $100.00 an hour. Seen all kinds of prices for the sensor but non above $100, most of the prices I saw were well below that. What do y'all think, anybody done this or have had to pay for it?
The part number for the sensor is 27431-HN2-000
tks

With the help of someone on here I've not changed mine yet. But with someone step by step instructions and someone posting up a copy of the service manual I definitely think you could change it yourself for a lot cheaper!
first question is; what is reason to think angle sensor is bad???
angle sensor should be $25 for aftermarket or $75 max discounted for Honda oem. 06380-HN2-305 is oem part number for angle sensor kit from honda east. lots of them on ebay also. o-ring usually comes with it, real easy to replace, the part you have listed is the angle senor rod for the angle sensor, to replace the sensor you have to unplug unit, pull out two bolts put new sensor and o-ring in place and pre-load the sensor (put in place and rotate to line up holes, you should feel spring tension when aligning it, bolt down and plug in.)( make sure sensor rod is in slot and rotate to align it to holes). you have to remember the dealers have a lot of overhead, it takes time to diagnose problems with all of the electronics on atv's.
most dealers charge min. one hour labor if it takes 5 minutes or 59 minutes. I am sure that any Atv mechanic can tell many horror stories about trying to fix some machines. Some jobs are a breeze and some you just have to walk away from and regroup... been there done that!!!!.
i still would like to know what reason angle sensor needs to be replaced? Was testing done or just a guess? reason i ask is i have done a few ruby hondamatic rebuilds and never had to replace an angle sensor yet.
Sorry for sort of late reply, work etc. The Rubicon has been giving me problems for a couple of years where it would not shift and stuttered in reverse. Always needed to re-initialize it, hold the two electric shift buttons down, etc. That worked for awhile but no longer works, the bike display starts flashing all the time. So into the shop it goes and they determined it was the angle sensor. That's where I'm at right now, just phoned them and they haven't received the part yet,
I asked them what the part number they ordered and they told me 15267. I'm now searching online what this is and where it goes. The number I came up with for the angle sensor for a 2001 Rubicon was 27431-HN2-000, worth about $10.00 OEM.
Sorry for the long winded post, trying to figure out what's going on.......
So now you know why I have concerns about all of this.......
Tks everyone for your replies, I'll hopefully come back with the end result.
Alright, thanks to harig for pointing out I had the wrong part showing (the shaft instead of the actual sensor), I have since located the sensor in the crankcase section of the parts diagram, number 8 in the list, and it is worth bit more than the shaft, roughly $ 70.00. This is coming together as perhaps not such a bad deal after all. I really don't have what's necessary to do this job, especially in the winter. The old saying, if you can't pay, you can't play.......
changing sensor is as easy as it gets, 5 minute job, figuring out if it is bad is the hard part. it sounds like the same thing my friends 2001 ruby did. he took it to dealer and they wanted almost $3000 to replace the hondamatic with labor and parts. i bought the machine for spare parts for mine and decided to see if i could fix the hondamatic., rebuilt it and my friend wanted it back. long story short it had many of the same problems you described when dealer told him hondamatic was bad. the motor side swivel swash plate bearing was toast, the angle sensor measures the angle of the swivel swash plate. pix shows cut away
just hope that it is only the angle sensor........................
The dealer is saying the mechanic had to take some of the exhaust part/parts off. not sure which as haven't seen the bike since I left it there. It's been there 10 days already, you'd think they would've had the part by now? And this is a Honda dealership.
the exhaust pipe needs to be loosened to move out of the way to get to sensor, two bolts on exhaust flange and loosen clamp on pipe, also the heat shield has to come off. very easy to do and to get to....
I can and do a lot of mechanic stuff but when I'm unsure about something, I really don't want to have to come back here and bother people and ask a ton of questions. I don't have much testing equipment, etc. I had no idea where this sensor was and what it did, and always a bit worried about breaking something else along the way ending up in costing even more money. I don't enjoy sending my toys in for repair, and don't usually unless it's for something I know nothing about. But I will question the hours they put into changing the sensor.
I want to post back when I get the bike.
they will probably hit you up for a new copper gasket on the exhaust pipe between the head and pipe also. it takes more time to get exhaust out of the way than it takes to replace sensor. i forgot about the exhaust being in the way...but it is easy to get to and not hard to do. most of your labor will be testing to find the problem. Usually the motor is on the bench when i install the sensor during assembly.
Got the bike back, tried negotiating the labor charge, wouldn't budge, said the mechanic spent more than the two hours they charged me. Also said the going rate for the same shops are around $100 an hour. I won't be going back there hopefully. I can drive a little further and check on their hourly rate first. So, $395.00 later, my atv is back home.
