I just picked up my new 2015 rubicon, love the bike, hate the lights. I managed to find a top pod light led direct replacement. Its a 885 bulb. The 2 bottom ones are a very odd fitting and im having trouble finding an led replacement. Ive thought about an h7 and just silicone it in place and splice the wires but im exploring all other options first. I will be installing a led light bar as well in the near future but for now i just want to swap out the stock bulbs for led. Im not interested in hid. Thanks in advance, im new to this site so i look forward for input from others and i will hopefully be able to have my own advice.
the bulb fitment is honda only on the bottom lights (has been for the last 20 years on honda ATVs ) only choice is to make a pair fit (from other atv companys ) or wait and see if a aftermarket company (like cat eys i think) comes out with something
So i just checked with a 2014 420 and they have the exact same headlights as the new rubicon which are the odd fitted ones.... ill keep this updated as to what I do and ill make a youtube vid of it
Yep I just had a look in a catolog I have, they don't even list bulbs for the 420 or newer 500's. It must have just been the older machines than H6M's fit. I guess on these machines they are Honda specific bulbs. Sounds like you can only get the bulbs from Honda. I guess you'll have to modify the stock headlight, or just mount a LED lightbar on the rack.
So my led 30w h4 lights came in. I chose the h4 because it would fit tightly into the socket and sit flush so i was able to put a bead of jb weld between the bulb housing and the socket. I did have to file the socket slightly so it would fit in. I then spliced the wires and connected the 3 wires i had soldered to the bulb prongs. Ill mention once i soldered the wires to the led buld i coated then in a thick layer of silicone. Once all conneted and light fixture back jn place i gave them a try and im super impressed. The low beam is the day time running lights and high beam is way brighter. Its pretty cool. The top pod 880 bulb was a direct replacement with 50w. I still intend on installing a lightbar but for now the led is a bit brighter over stock and no more orange glow.
Was nosing around last night and the 2014-up Ranchers and 2015-up Foremans use a different bulb now than the "Honda only" bulbs from the early 420's and the 05-11 Foremans and 05-14 Rubicons.
Anyone have a pic of the new style bulb? Just wondering if it's another "Honda only"design or if the new ones might be compatible with aftermarket automotive bulbs.
I was in the same pickle with the lights. Completely hate the stock halogen. This was my solution .
Took the whole Assembly out. Used a heat gun to remove the lens from the housing.
Bought some LED pods and LED strips from auto zone.
I out the strips behind the pod and slid them in. Resealed my lens and spliced the wires into the stock harness.
Green ground. White high beam, blue low beam. Or vice versa can't remember exactly.
Just have these pics while i was doing it so you can see one headlight with and one without. Pictures don't do justice with the lights burning though. Wired the led strip with low beam and the pod with high beam. Looks and works great
