There are 2 types of blink patterns to determine the code. A long blink and a short blink. Long blinks are x10 and the shorts are the number of actual blinks.

Ex. 2 long blinks and 4 short blinks gives you a code 24 (2x10+4=24).

I had a machine come in today with multiple problems. Code 24 was one of them and it turned out to be a dirty shift motor (brush was stuck). I had time and took some pics.

Remove the shift motor from the engine and then remove the 2 allen bolts, proceed to take the shift motor apart.

Inspect everything and if all looks good proceed to clean it up for reassembly.

It's easiest to clamp the brushes to hold them open while installing the armature. The springs will fight you in the small space.

Install the armature and release your clamps. You will want to lightly clamp the teeth part of the armature in a vise or use a pair of vise grips or the magnet will pull it out and you have to start over again.

I use a little dielectric grease around the rubber washer and install the housing. Tighten the allen bolts and your ready to go.

How did the shift motor look on the inside? The 4x4 could be flashing be cause of a low voltage signal, which could be caused be a faulty shift motor if it was bad enough. Have you shifted through the gears (all of them) manually just to make sure it isn't another gremlin?

I had trouble with it blinking codes a while ago....turned out to be one of the brushes in the starter wash stuck. Also had trouble after that off and on, mostly on wet days. I waited until all was working good and sprayed all of the electral connections down with fluid film. Never had another problem with shifting after that.

I have recently purchased an Honda ES bolt on shifter from ACE's in Meridian, Ms. We have installed it on our ATV ourselves and has made all the difference in the world. It has fixed all our problems. You can contact them at honda_experts@yahoo.com or call Tyler @ 601-616-3299.

Also i purchased for $50.00 with free shipping. Hope you find your answers. Crystal
