Default Gas in Oil?

Hello everyone. First off I want to introduce myself. I live in Northern NY and do alot of tinkering. I can figure just about anything out given enough time. Pretty much everything I know about mechanics has come from just diving in and doing it.

I am having a problem with my 08 Rancher 420 EFI. I just changed the oil in it and it smells really gassy and is really thin. This is usually like this when I change the oil and I know it is not right. Also it looks aweful gray, almost like water has been introduced, but there is no water. I know antifreeze is not going in and and it does not smoke or anything.

Also, the electrode on the plug looks good but there is alot of carbon stuck to the rest of the plug and the piston dome looks like it has a little more carbon on it than it should. Not sure if it is running rich or not but by the looks of this I would assume so.

Question is what could be causing this. I have done some searches and have come up fairley empty. Found a couple threads on gas in oil but they didnt really lead anywhere.

Thank you much for your reposnses and your time.

PS- I am getting a shop manual for this bike soon.

See, I was kinda thinking rings, but the fuel has to get into the cylinder somehow. Possibly a bad injector?

Welcome to the forum. For it to be running rich enough to get gas into the oil it should be running like crap, fouling the plug and smoking like crazy. The only time the fuel pump is going to activate is when the key switch is on and the whole system doesn't operate until there is the pulse signal/fire at the plug. Does the air filter smell like gas?

I'm over in watertown. You ask the guys down in Evans Mills. The can-am shop. Those guys are pretty sharp. Being fuel injected its wierd.

Thanks Gauntlet, I was actually thinking of stopping in there, just dont feel right asking a business for advice when I am going to do the work myself. I think though that if an injector is bad, tehre is a possibility that it may inject fuel on the wrong stroke, ie: exhaust stroke as well, or that it may be leaking if there is pressure in the system. Sometimes this backfires going down a hill with no load. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.

I have a 07 rancher and i think they all backfire like that. Those guys are pretty laid back.

I thought my oil smelled like gas too (2012 Foreman) when I did the first oil change. The oil looked fine. It runs great and doesn't smoke or anything. Maybe the oil in these things just has that smell? A bit of gas smell can go a long way.

This oil looks BAD....really milky gray and thin. It has not been swamped either.
