Default promark winch toast??

So my ranchers winch will go out but not in so I took the leads off and put a 12v charger on it and it moved a little. Then we took jumper cables from the battery to the winch and when I pressed the in button the winch drew all the power it was making shut the dash off and killed the bike. Would you guys say the winch is toast or is it a short somewhere?

How does it start. The battery might have a bad cell or the winch could have an internal short. Or the gears in the winch are screwed and causing it to bind. Just some ideas. Good luck, but I would start with a good battery if you have one laying around. Even a car battery. The charger might not be able to do it without a battery to store some of the energy.

You put the jumper cables directly to the winch? If so it should "run" without pushing any buttons.

I've got the battery in my 2007 that I can swap it out with. The battery is oem from 2000. I made the dash go blank and the lights and staled the it dead. It worked fine the week before hauling wood and then then we needed it to plow it would only go out. So we figured it was the rocker switch and swaped it out with my 9ft corded switch didnt do anything.

Yes the jumpers were directly to the winch. It killed the engine cold after a few seconds, Think it took all the power from the battery and the alternator. My dad's sure the winch is f***ed

Use a good battery and test it again. It might just need taken apart and cleaned and a few cheap parts to get it going again.

I'm not going to wast my money on a superwinch. I've just heard so meny horrior storys about them.

redneckdude, the venom looks like a deacent winch but I'm looking for steel cable. This winch would be going on the 2000 rancher. My foremans still got the 4,000lbs promark. I can get a 3000lbs promark for 150.

The 2 cheaper winches I have used and would buy again is the Viper Max and Venom. The Viper has better customer service so I've been pretty stuck on them. I want to try a KFI, they are getting great reviews. I of course have my old Warn that just keeps on going but they are spendy.
