The axle is held in (in part) by the brake panel. To remove the axle the brake panel has to be taken off. That will not help you though for what your wanting to do. Bearings is what is holding the axle in place (which have snap rings holding them in) and a shoulder built onto the axle rides against the bearing keeping it from getting pulled form either direction, it only comes out the brake side after the brake panel is removed.

Well ****! Look like I'm gonna have to try and grind the weld off and pull it out and weld it up again for the time being. Thanks guys! Thanks vermhot.

The rear hubs on my 89 300 foretrax have been both welded for years. When I changed the brearings or brakes I just ground off the weld and then rewelded them. You should be good.

Once you get it off you might be able to chase new threads onto it and save yourself some money. It could be metric or standard depending on what you have around. A finer thread pitch will hold the best though.
