Default 01 rancher

I looked at a 2001 honda rancher 350 today. Nice little machine. When I went to go to start it up the red reverse light stayed on. Is the switch bad, if so is it hard to replace? Oh he wanted $1,800 is that a fair price? This is not me in the picture.

The switch might be bad. If it is, you have to pull the engine and remove the rear crankcase cover. The switch is bolted to the inside of the cover.

I almost forgot, but it's also possible that the end of the shift drum could be broken off. The end of the shift drum has a slot that the gear position switch fits into. If the end of the shift drum brakes off, the gear position indicator won't work properly. Some of the '00 and '01 models had problems with the end of the shift drum breaking off. Honda updated the shift drum in '02 with a thicker end.

The owner took it to local honda shop to get a quote to fix it. He said it would be $300 plus parts to fix. It's not a big deal for me, but for the wife or other people it might be. Do you think the quad is worth $1,800 with original 1/2 worn tires, broken tail light and needs new brakes? Well the brakes are half there. Also is that switch hard to do myself, or should i take it in? Trying to fiqure out if it's worth getting or not.

Once you get the rear cover off, the gear position switch is really simple to replace. You will need to remove the engine or the swing arm to get the cover off, though.

I guess you found the manual in the thread that Rich posted.

Thanks for the info. What content would it be under to change out that switch?

You mean in the service manual? Look under the "alternator" section to remove the rear cover. Look under the "lights/meter/switches" section for how to install the gear position switch. I don't think it shows in the manual, but don't forget to align the long end of the pin on the switch with the "N" or it won't work right. Also, put loctite on the bolt threads.

NADA says average retail is 1,480 Average Retail Value — An average retail unit should be clean without obvious defects. All rubber and cables should be in good condition. The paint should match and have a good finish. All lights and switches should work properly. The mileage should be within or slightly higher than the average range. This unit should also pass any emission inspection. Low retail is 1,125 Low Retail Value — A low retail unit may have extensive wear and tear. Body parts may have dents and blemishes. The buyer can expect to invest in cosmetic and/or mechanical work. This vehicle should be in safe running order. Low retail vehicles usually are not found on dealer lots. Low Retail is not trade-in value.
