Default 2000 Rancher 350 ES won't go into reverse

The problem started this past winter while plowing snow, it was working fine then it would stop going into reverse when you pushed the button but after you pushed it a few times it would shift into reverse. Now It won't go in at all except sometimes when you ride it for a while it will shift into reverse. All other gears work fine. I'm new to these machines and dont see anything unhooked or broken, Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the cable might need adjusted. Does it shift into reverse with the manual shift tool when it's not working?

Welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the reply, I'm not sure if it will shift manually or not. I'll check this weekend.

I had a chance to run the machine this weekend and it will go into reverse manually. Although after I put it in reverse manually a few times it started to work with the ES about 75% of the time.

Intermediate problems are hard to diagnose, especially online. There are a few possibilities. One could be the sensor is going bad or the wire going to the sensor. It would be just below the rope starter on the rear of the motor. Could be as simple as adjusting the clutch or the reverse cable might just need a touch of adjusting (even though it shifts manually).

Thanks for the responses, I have adjusted the cable with no improvement. Where is the reverse sensor? I had a quick look by the pull cord and all I seen was a rubber plug to the right of the cord handle.

It's on the bottom side of the motor and will have a wire plugged into it. Here's a picture of what it looks like.
