My sister's ES had a similiar problem of not shifting into reverse. Check your battery. Since they are electronic shift, when the engine is at idle it will draw power from the battery if needed to complete the shift. Last winter while plowing it just quit shifting. Not sure why it would start but it would. This spring the battery was dead so I jumped it to start and it would shift just fine, however it would not start. I took the battery out and there was no fluid in it. The battery was replaced and it works great. The other thing is to put anit corrosion paste on the electronic connections, the battery, the plasitic electrical connection boxes. Since this is an ATV and those connections are subject to water, it will help them to be fully conductive.

I just ran into this yesterday and thought of this thread. I had one come in the cable was adjusted too tight, it would not go into reverse until you let the lever back about half way. I don't have any explanation as to why that one did that because it shouldn't have. The only thing I can think of is contamination on the reverse stop lever (inside of the motor) and it wasn't letting the sensor ground completely when it was completely pulled. It's probably not your problem (first one I ever came across like this) but something else to check.
