Should a cylinder be honed with a ball or stone hone? Any tips on honing will help also.

It depends. Some sleeve companies specify which style to use. I have a stone style that says: 220 grit standard, 240 grit hard stone, 320 grit when installing moly rings. Check the piston ring directions, thats where I found the correct application.

I would think if you had a slightly out of round cylinder the flat stones would help straighten the cylinder some.

I prefer the ball type, but whatever type you use I would recomend to spin the hone slow and move up and down
kinda fast so you get the marks going up and down instead of round & round. Also after honing wash the cylinder
with soap & water 2 or3 times to make sure you get all the grit out.
