Hello all! My name is Mike. I hail from good ole Nc!
I have a 06 rancher 400 at. Recently ive been riding in deeper water than normal. I watch my buds on all there older quads with way fewer electrical componets than my rancher. I always asumed that this would be a problem with deep water.
So yesterday i had a mishap while treading through some deep water. The water level was up to the carb, seat and racks still out of water. The engine bogged, before i choked it, it died under water. It instantly started back as i was hitting the starter instantly!! LOL!. I got out and is ran like **** for 5 mins due to the water in the pipe and possibly carb? I checked the oil today, no water, however i changed it and being a metal fabricator by trade i made a temp snorkel for the exhaust! (1" steel 90 down, pvc pipe up)Long story short it died under water again.

So ive been reading and i need to electric seal the spark plug and as many other harness connections as possible. Also extend the vents higher. Are there 2 vents on the carb as well? Any other secrets that i need to do to the ole rancher? The motor seems to be fine runs great, i diddnt change to oil today after is stalled under water, however the snorkel was a temp proto and it got knocked off under water due to the scuffell to get to the winch from the back. (winch on the rear as well as the front). Again it started and ran like **** for a while, but checked the dip stick and appears to be no water in the oil. I really dont wont to hurt nothing due to my water subbin.. lol. Just need some tips, also gonna take the pull start cover off and seal it as well as the hole. I guess i need to clean out behind the cover good to get all the mess out before i seal it? Any tips pics etc etc is much appreciated!

Mike

Here is a shotty cell phone vid clip that shows and you can hear it sputter once it gets to the deepest point. You can see my reach for the choke..lol.

put some dielectric grease in the spark plug boot and if you get water in the carb there is a drain on the bowl i dont know where it is on the ranchers but on the foremans it is on the passanger side on the very bottom, a flat head screw just loose it a little. it will have a hose that runs down with a check valve. just let it drain till you can smell good gas. it is also good to plug that drain line with a golf tee or something.

Also if your in water up to the racks, I would say time to get an intake snorkel. you dont want to suck water into the engine, it can get very expensive.

dieletric greese the plug and all electrical connections. do your intake snorkel and then extend all vent lines(1 on each diff, one on each drum brake, one for the fan, and one or two for the carb) to the top of the snorkel. and last but not least plug the carb drain line with a screw or golf tee when you are riding deep...just be sure to take it out before you go riding though big hills. after taht you should be good to go.

There is a little rubber hose coming from the bottom of the carb. It is a vent for the fuel bowl. If you take the carb apart you will see what I am talking about. But the fix is super easy. My hose was hanging a little below the foot pegs and when it hit water it would create a vacuume in the line and stop the fuel. The fix for your problem is to put a tee fitting in that line with one end going down to the skid pan where it was, and the other end going up to the breather area. This will keep it from creating a vacum when under water.
