I've read earlier commentaries regarding these tires and was hoping I could get some comments from folks who have lived with either, and/or both tires for an extended time in similar conditions to my use.
Your experiences could determine the selection. My riding is certianly utilitarian, in northern New Mexico with half mile long rocky 40 degree climbing private road, occasional deep snow, climbing the road and pushing the snowplow. The stock Maxxis tires work fine with chains all around when climbing through deep snow or pushing the plow... and quite frankly, I have no complaints about the stockers on the 2012 Foremen, as I've climbed some nasty rocks and loose slopes with 'em without spinning or control issues!

i have no expierience with either of these, but i did alot of research when i bought my tires, it was between zilla's and bighorns and i went with zilla's because i thought the bighorns were too good for what i needed.... there pretty awesome tires..... i know the bighorns are beast's on rocky terrain another reason why i didn't go for them..... we just don't have too much of that here in jersey....

You might have a hard time finding the sizes you want because I believe Carlisle has either phased them out or is going to. I would look for ACT HDs over the XLRs.
They are excellent snow tires and do great when good tracion is required. ACTs are "all condition tires" more like an all terrain rather than a mud terrain. The 1" lugs and soft rubber compound combined slow steering the reaction. Big Horns are 7 year old technology and there are lots of better tires on the market today. The Big Horns will probably last twice as long as the XLRs will.
