It is cast metal! The knob on the side is plastic though and I siliconed the contactor box really good cause it didnt look very water tight.

I hear ya. The contactor box is kinda cheesy and bigger than the warns, I took it apart to see what was inside of it and there was a little circuit board and two relays, the board is probably for the wireless controller. The wires are shorter going to the winch which means Im going to have to find a place under the front fenders to mount the box, which is why I siliconed it up to make it hopefully waterproof. If it doesnt last Ill buy the warn upgrade kit which was mentioned in a previous post.

One note of caution if you're planning on buying a synthetic to replace steel cable on a winch.

If you run the steel first and the steel cable gets some wear on it. It can groove your fairlead and winch drum and may end up cutting your synthetic cable up when you use it. This will end up with your synthetic rope being MUCH less durable than it should be!!

Pros of steel cable:
1) A little easier to splice in a new eyelet if it breaks.

Cons of steel cable:
1) Steel line will rust, you're supposed to unspool and grease it occasionally.
2) Steel line as it frays has sharp steel slivers that can and will end up in your hand!
3) When steel line brakes it has a vicious recoil that can hurt anyone standing nearby.

Pros of synthetic cable:
1) No sharp slivers
2) No wicked recoil
3) If the line breaks you can simply tie it together in a knot to continue winching in a pinch.
4) Easier to care for
5) Same strength as steel cable

Cons of synthetic cable
1) Still requires some maintenance, which usually consists of unspooling it then washing it in a bucket of car wash.
2) Can be cut easily if you fail to pay attention to what it's rubbing against

As for the price difference between viper and warn, the only difference between a viper and a warn motor is the windings. Warn motors have series wound motors which does make them better for long, hard pulls. That being said; whatever winch you choose I would avoid long hard pulls as it's rough on them all.

A long hard pull would be defined as continuously holding down the button while the wheeler is not moving. If the winch can't budge it and get the wheeler moving you need to try something else. You'll end up with a snapped cable or a burnt up winch motor. A snatch block or doing some digging coupled with using the wheels to help paddle or push your way will help break your wheeler free. As a rule let the winch motor cool after a pull, 10-15 seconds winching with 10-15 seconds of rest will keep your motor healthy.

Also there are dealers that can and will help you with a price so you can get a warranty, it never hurts to call one and ask if they can match or beat an ebay price! The reason you'll find them cheaper on ebay is most manufacturers such as Viper or Warn restrict their authorized dealers from posting prices below a specific price. People selling them on ebay with no warranty usually are people selling them below the minimum advertised price, they use ebay to sell you the winch for cheaper and get out of having to honor the warranty. If you need assistance finding a dealer that will work with you let me know!

great write up pondtunes i would also like to add 1 thing for everybody
1st thing ...you need to think about is what enviroment your going to ride in
if your going to be riding where there is big bolders and lots of sharp rocks and not a lot of straight pulls you may want to go with a steel cable (its like that in new england)

Great Write up Pondtunes!

I bought a 3 year "No Questions Asked Warranty" for $30 with this new Warn I bought through....gowarn.com

although anybody with any common sense knows it's only a 2 year Warranty, as Warn gives you a 1 year Warranty, but Hey for $30 I feel it's a Bargain.

if you smoke one, according to what they told me is get them a USP tracking # and they would Cross ship a new one out that day........hopefully I won't need it!
