Default What Brand Is This?

I am in talks with someone on Craigslist about buying this 50cc ATV for my 5.5 year old son.

The seller (who knows some guys I work with at the FD) states that it is a Japanese ATV that he bought new in 2005 for $900 but he doesn't recall what brand it is. He told me he bought it from his brother who got a bunch of them shipped in crates with what looked like Japanese writting on it, but he said he wouldn't know if it was Chinese, Korean, etc.... He said no issues with it running, starting, etc... it only needs a new battery.

Any idea on what brand or make this is? It kind of looks like an older Suzuki 50cc to me but he said there are not markings or anything indicating that it is a Suzuki.

Thanks.

He said it has not been used much as his kids outgrew it too fast and his bottom line is $450.

I have spent the better part of the last few hours researching these Chinese kids ATVs and I am out. The motor has 139FMB stamped on it (which from everything that I have looked up is a Chinese 50cc), so it most likely a cheap Chinese ATV.

I think that I am going to save up some more and buy a used Polaris 50cc Outlaw instead as at least this way I know what I am getting and it will be much safer (no need to insert Polaris jokes here).

Yikes, then again, after looking at some of the Polaris Outlaw forums and reading almost 7 pages of my Outlaw is broken, running like crap, not starting, etc.. makes me want to reconsider my last post.

my uncle bought one of these china bikes and the thing could not handle keeping up with a brand name bike. the muffler broke of right at the weld. the rear brake assembly broke. the front brakes were controlled by two cables ( one for each side). and the control lever broke. it operates like a polaris with a varible speed pully and belt. he spent 1000.00 for his and its supposed to be a 200 but there is now way it can keep up with our 200 hondas . and all this stuff happened in the first 2 months of him owning is. itis very poorly made. my opinion is to buy something that will last longer than a month and not be a treasure hunt to find parts if you ever need them. for him to find just the brake assembly was almost impossible. we ended up converting the two brake cables into one cable.

Look for a KFX 50 or even a KFX 80. My kids started out on a KFX 80 (2006) so far 2 of my 4 boys rode it. They have now moved up to Grizzly 125's and the KFX 80 I have is waiting for my 3 year old and 1 year old to start riding. You can not go wrong with a name brand and if you only have one to ride it you can almost get what you paid for it when your son is ready to move up.

You could take a chance with a knock off, but it might be hard to explain to your son why it is broken and you have no idea where to get parts for it?
