Default Part Out? Opinions and comments needed!

My friend and I came across a 2009 brute force 650 with less then 20 hrs on it left to sitting to die out in the back bush of one of his farms. we had to drag it out with a field tractor, and it was quite obvious to us that it had been stolen seeing that thieves took the time to grind off the VIN on the frame . so since it was his property we found it on, i left all legal issues for him to deal with. So i had called the OPP (ontario provincial police, here in canada) and they told me that if there is no VIN number recoverable off the frame its as good yours as the original owners. Now enough with the story, SO i've purchased it from my friend for $400 (CAD), it has new tires (original's jut mangled), racks bent and plastic cracked, and there was dirt and crud everywhere! BUT we got it running via the flathead that they left in the ignition, we've found the timing is off, or just a really dirty carb ( we had flames out the exhaust and carb. and we were unable to get it to move. What i really wanna know is if i should throw down a couple hundred and get her going, OR part it out and make some cash, i recently got rid of my rincon so i'd consider the rebuild. your thoughts?

thanks, nate

I don't really know how canadian police work but here its a felony to knowingly be on the receiving end of stolen property. VIN #'s are usually located in more than one location on most quads. Seems like the police should recover the property and at least make an effort to contact the original owner. It would probably make his day regardless of the condition of the bike, not to mention its just the right thing to do. I'm sure if it was stolen they could at least match it up to a description of the property.

Yea i know it would be nice to get it back to him, but since we couldn't find the VIN on the frame or engine block we gave up, and the OPP said they could not report it stolen unless those numbers were visible ( they had been scratched out leaving no more then 4-g-7 on the block, I also inquired about possibly finding who may have owned it ( i was thinking i would bring it to him and let him have it for the price of the tires) or just part with it, but the OPP again answered back saying that they would have to take possession of it for quite sometime, and I know that the units recovered usually don't make it back to the owner around here. they just end up in police or insurance auctions..

If all the legal things are in your favor, mess around with it and see if you can get it running good. If it won't cost an arm/leg to get it in shape go for it and ride it until something goes wrong and then part it out. I'm sure since there is no VIN there is no chance of selling the machine as a whole so you might as well get some fun out of it.

I agree with toodeep, let er rip. But another note, what happens if you get caught driving a quad that has the vin numbers ground off, I highly doubt they are going to let you go, If thats the case why even have vin numbers? Just gring them off after the warranty runs out. Something just dont smell right.

I guess if you got the property to have some fun on go for it..... But good luck getting the lic. plate and insurance that you will need to ride anywhere (legally) in Ontario.

X2 I would definitely do my homework on this one. It could quickly turn into a he said/she said type of a deal and suddenly you find yourself backed into a corner. But if all works out, go for it!

thanks for the opinions etc. i contacted the opp again monday night and explained that the VIN numbers couldn't be recovered, and (the same officer) said "don't bother, its as good as yours as it was the original owners" he explained they don't seem to show interest in vehicles recovered in poor condition, because if they are not running they usually move onto the crusher in the end. also if i do get it running, i have a 15km private cottage road and over 1500 acres with many trails all on private property owned by the Orimat cottagers association, so I'm not too worried about legal issues, as there are contracts regarding off road vehicles on this property. I'll keep my foreman for the big stuff the Kawi can't handle . I also think the fact the i was so open to them about it influenced them to allow me to keep the unit. Thanks guys!
