Default Big Red hard to start after setting long time

I leave my 1986 Big Red out at my dad's farm and get to ride it maybe once a month. It is very hard to start when it sits for a while without being ridden.Once it starts then it will fire up right away for the rest of the day. What happens is it seems like it isn't getting any gas.It cranks over like crazy but won't start, then after a while of cranking it fires up.I've checked the screen in the shut-off valve;it's clean.I've check the gas tank vent;it's clear. If I give it a shot of ether it'll start right away.

Try not to use ether. Take the carb off and give it a good cleaning with some carb cleaner. Also you might try re-adjusting the carb. Also try adjusting the valves. A freind of mine had the same issue with his polaris a couple weeks ago and all he done was cleaned the carb and adjusted valves. He had the same symptoms as you, would not start cold but once it finally ran it would be fine rest of the day.
