Don't worry too much about the belt drive. The only problem with them is if water gets in and theres basically only 2 ways it can get in. 1) You have it in water all the way to the belt case brether intake, which would mean pretty deep. 2) On the belt case there is a rubber seal and normally they don't leak, but if there's a pinch or something like that in it it might let in some water. If the belt gets wet just take the cover off and let everything dry out.
The most problems I have seen out of belt driven atv's is "smoking the belt", which is not the atv's fault. There is a high and low sub tranny there for a reason and i have seen some poeple that just thought low was for pulling or hauling heavy loads. It's the same as slipping your clutch only your slipping the belt. Slip it too much and it crystalizes and won't grip the pulleys. Most of the time you only need low if going across something very slow and technical or climb long steep hills.

I've been looking at UTVs myself lately. Here's what I have found out...
The Mule will do a whopping 24mph and the Rhino will do almost 50 mph stock. (660 - not the 450) A few low cost mods will get the Rhino humming around 60mph. If you want to get really crazy, they make a turbo for it ($4,000!) The Mule has less ground clearance and a longer wheelbase which makes it less capable off road. The Mule is more of a utility workhorse as the name "Mule" implies. There are Rhinos all over ebay with transmission problems from running oversized mud tires. I was pretty close to getting a 660 Rhino until I heard the rumor about Honda introducing a UTV. I am willing to wait and see what happens with Honda. If I were to buy one tomorrow, the Rhino wins hands down. The Ranger and Arctic Cat are cumbersome, sloppy, and slow in my opinion. |
