My 2 oldest step kids have them(12/14). Having them is a privilege and they can loose them at any minute. I agree with keeping it simple (no data plan) and unlimited texting, texting is about the only way we can communicate out here in the sticks though. 3 bars and you can't call but you can send a text.

The pay as you go with unlimited text is the way to go, I guess. Thanks for the feedback.

I agree! IF you do this, Prepaid it's the way to go, my Daughter has her phone through walmart and it's cheaper than my plan with Verizon and I got limited mins & No text,.... she has unlimited Mins & Text! in the last year or so the prepaid phone is the one to go with for what your getting with it!

if I may...... it could be a very good tool to ensure their grades stay acceptable also, just present it is a privilege that can be removed!

Maybe a little late to say, but a few years ago I had the same problem. Me and my ex found a phone for kids that you could program 5 numbers in and that was it. No texting or anything. It did have a locater on it. But your 12 year old might not be happy with that.

We gave our 12 year old son a phone this summer, whatever you do get one with unlimited texting!!! In two weeks he had 1500+ text messages! It is nice to be able to keep in contact with him while he is with his friends.

UPDATE......My sons Mother purchased the phone and plans. She is paying the bills for them. I guess I was taking too long to decide what plan to get, in her mind..... Thanks for all the input.....
