haha I just noticed that! Yea 60-10 (aka junk yard rod) is for welding garbage metal, it burns through rust paint everything really. However if you know how to run it right it makes some pretty welds. In say 70-18, the 70 is your strength (PSI) the 1 means all position and the 8 is how much hydrogen is in the rod. We tig the roots of boiler tubes that way you KNOW its a perfect weld, you cant have ANY push through and it has to be perfectly flush on the inside. Our tests are on heavy wall tube in a 6g position that way you cover every possible position there is. Thats why boilermakers are the best at what they do .

aight, i gotcha, just never seen the numbers hyphenated before. so it kinna threw me. we use the 7018 for tensile strength. seein as how we have a lot of ground engaging parts and "self destructive" equipment. we call the 7018 farm rod around here cause you can stick about anything together with it. god knows ive burned through a lot of dirty metal with it. may not be the prettiest weld (especially in the vertical, i havnt quite mastered that one yet) but they hold most of the time. im not a professional welder by any means, im not even certified. but my boss likes to have me on the business end of the welder. so i guess thats sayin somethin.

heck yea I have my common arc thats the highest cert in the BMs. If you have some 6010 or 7010 around give it a try, it runs nothing like 7018. You have to work with it kinda whip it back and forth or make small circles, its not as forgiving as 7018. Then you'll see what real junk yard rod is!

Thats exactly it man! I busted a tube test on my last job but my foreman had me take a mig test (NOTHING like a household mig) and I passed that running fe2 wire and carbon. The miggers on the job are the last ones out cause we have to put the cladding on the tubes once the pannels are all in. WoW im only 2 beverages down and on an empty stomach, Im alredy feelin it LOL.
