I had a DR-Z 400E that sounded like a sewing machine it clacked so much.
As for the Foreman making more noise when the valves are set, if they are tightened down enough to tick, I think someone botched the job. Usually it is the other way around. There used to be an old saying, slappy valves are happy valves. I'd rather see them adjusted to the loose end of the spec rather than the tight end. I also think that dealer pull these stories completely out of their asses in the hopes that you either a) don't know any better and go away, or b) get frustrated with them and go away, or c) decide to fix it yourself and go away. Bottom line is you are supposed to go away and not make them work. Nothing gets my dander up like a dealer saying "it's normal."
