These homespun silencers won't increase the back pressure over stock mufflers, and should flow MUCH better... so the most restrictive part of the whole system is the stock muffler. In fact you could easily run either of these to replace the stock muffler. so long as a couple of chore boy stainless scrubbie pads were unraveled and LOOSLY inserted in about 6" of final exhaust pipe as a very effetive spark arrester, still flowing better than the stock micro screen.
OCD engineers.... the following excercise is time spent better than watching TV and is admittedly greatly simplified and does not account for a lot of basic fluid dynamics factors, which for this application won't influence the outcome. Muffler set up: the calculated area of the entrance and exit pipes is 1.48 square inches. The combined calculated area of the 30 perferation holes in the vertical intake stack which represents the initial most restrictive baffle is also 1.48 square inches. Notwithstanding the fact that for a given cross sectional area, a single pipe's flow will far exceed an equivalent area of multiple smaller holes/pipes, for our application, these factors can be ignored. For the pipe set up: the internal baffle first reduces the 2" ID to 1.5" giving an area of 1.766 square inches. Each baffle pair succesively disrupts air flow with a .625 square inch baffle, and opening a bypass of .625 square inch, effectively returning flow area to 1.766 square inches, though hampered with lots of redirected flow and turbulance. I have couple of sexy "staggered duals" pipe set ups drawn and will post photos when I get it finished in a couple of days. Remember that in this all steel application, acoustic attenuation is achieved by transforming the instanteous heat/pressure/sound impulse (BANG!) into a cooler, lower magnitude, and slower, gentle release..(whooosh...). These objectives are accomplished by a 5x to 6x increase in pipe cross sectional area (pi x r squared), full length cooling, and sound and flow disruption via pipe bends and baffles. Let your imagination guide you!! The bottom line is that this a cheap way to make your ride much less noisy, and help keep our trails open. If you ride gently, you'll be grinning from ear to ear, and when you stab the throttle, you'll grin again!

Attached are follow up photos,
1.) balanced on the rear of a foreman for comparison to the alternate silencer, 2.) mounted on the foreman 3.) another shot of the muffler components ready to mount

This will likely be my next mod I'll post some pics when it's done.

As a fluke, I made up a single straight pipe in place of a the muffler... more reducion in sound than I thought it would be, but of course no where near as quiet as the other configurations.

I made one of these a while back. I bought a resonator (glass pack) from a local muffler shop and had him bend me a couple of small 90's of pipe. He had a bunch of them as most cars use them inline with their existing muffler to help quiet the car. I welded one 90 on each end of the resonator...one turned down for exhaust and the other directed towards the muffler with a flare on the end. I welded a small 2" section of pipe to the back plate on the stock muffler so the "silencer" could be attached with a muffler clamp. I painted it with rattle can bbq grill paint. Less than $25 and looks/sounds great (quiet).

The shorty glass pack does work well, though the end product can still give a bit throaty tone under load and is certainly more quiet than stock when simply cruising.
The straight through glass pack is a bit less effective than the baffle type mufflers or silencers to dampen the "black-black-black" report when decellerating or decending a grade using engine braking. Both approaches offer significant sound reductions over stock mufflers, at a "can't beat it" price.

Installed a pipe-type silencer (pipe and baffle set up) this afternoon on a Rancher 420.
Sweet ride, nice bike...now whisper quiet. A happy hunter.
