2001 Honda forman 500 tranny help~

Hi.

I am new to the site and have a chance to buy a 2001 Honda foreman 500. I have done lots of research on it think it may be the oil pump chain but just want to here what someone else might think.

The guy said he was driving it and it just stopped on day. Its a little bagged out with higher miles but the price is right. It fires up fine. I put it into every gear and try and drive it and it feels like when you leave your E brake on in your car and try and drive. it wants to move but it cant. I even had a friend lift the quad while trying to drive to see if the wheels would spin and they would not. But it look liked it wanted to. IF you rev it up after about 3 seconds it will make some kind of little grinding or rattling noise. I turned it off and pushed it in neutral and in gear with it off and it didn't make any grinding or funny noises.

I have not done and oil pressure check yet but that will probably be next. It seems like it would be a decent quad with some TLC I can get it for about 500 bux

I know I shouldnt be running it if the chain feel off so I dont wanna do it again unless im doing a test. Hopefully thats all it will be.

The quad has 17 000 KM. It was a service quad. I am from Canada and you can not normally find a nice 4x4 quad for under $2000. So if i could have $1000 into this quad it would not be bad.

Does it sound like a chain??

Also I noticed it leaks a little Anti freeze out of the top of the thermostat. Is it just the seal gone? It has sat for over a year out side.

that'd be a rubicon then.

even if you get it for $500 and decide you dont want to fix it up, you could part it out on ebay and make money.

ya it does not seem like a bad quad engine sounds good. Its just every gear seems to do the same. but when you put in neutral its ok if i remember. I may go do a oil pressure test tomorrow.

Just reading I would say the transmission is toast or the oil pump or both. Figure on the worse when buying. When the oil pump chain falls off it won't try to move at all, will rev normally like in neutral and makes no noise.
