Default 2012 foreman tick... Confirmed?

Hi guys,

Looking at the purchase of 2012 foreman or rancher tomorrow. Did you guys ever settle on what the cause of these engine ticks were?

Are your machines still making noises?

Thanks

welcome to the forum.

i've got 400+ miles on mine and its never gave me a trouble yet. some ppl get over worried if there machine makes a noise that they think it shouldn't.

buy the foreman with a extended warranty and never worry about the noises again.
its a honda.

Routine mechanic here..
Cold thicker oil, heavy cushion, quiet internals....
Warm thinner oil, less cushion, noisier internals.

I'm sure you still have plenty of lubrication , but the thick cushion cold oil is vastly reduced when the oil warms up and thins out.
Yes, multigrade oils are more viscosity stable, but they still thin with increasing temperature.
It sounds as though you have had good heads try to locate any mechanical issue and have done good work.
Suggestion:
If you're running 10W30 or 10-w-40 oil, switch to 20-w-50 and I'll bet the tick goes away. Not quite as thick but better overall, you can't go wrong with a Rotella T3 15-w-40, or Rotella T6 synthetic. I use Rotella extreme duty lubricants in everything from ATVs to farm tractors to Ford diesels and heavyduty mowing machines and have NEVER had a lubricant related issue, and internals look factory new and spanking clean after years of hard use.

so everyone is on the curious side of this noise. what it comes down to is the low idle of the efi causing the decompressor on the cam to click, at the same time it stumbles more than likely its not a problem as my machine runs amazingly well. if it is a problem i am sure honda will correct it. so buy one and ride the **** outta it

I have 70 miles on mine and like 14 hrs I hear a little squeal every now and then it comes and go's but no check engine light or running problems fixing to do my first service it seems to be getting stronger the more I break it in. the new 2012's have a fuel pump for the fuel injection from what I've been told its right in front of the engine looks like a canister. I think the noise is coming from that but i'm going to do my own service no valve tapping as of yet. Honda wants like 350.00 to do the first service that's nuts. Talked to service dept they said as long as keep up with my receipts and hours and all and the oils meet their standards i'm good plus I got the extended warranty.

Become amiliar with our equipment,,, do your own work, and you'll know every sound. Change your own oil and filters... use Shell Rotella T6 Synthetic, adjust your own valves, and let you machine warm up a minute before putting it to work, and don't run **** out of it. Work it hard and use it hard for sure if that's what makes you happy.....just don't abuse it. With this care, your honda will likely outlast you.
There's a reason you often see other makes being towed home by an old, beat to crap foreman... it called care, and honest use...without abuse.

SS got a good laugh out of the dealer's story.

I really have no idea what it is. It happens hot or cold, and most noticeable at idle. Keep me informed. I'll hold onto my factory rims and tires and will throw them back on before I take it in so I don't get any BS from the dealer!

I also have a little squeal from the radiator area and from the front brake pads. I inspected them while off, clean but a little noisy.

Have you found out anymore on the engine tick source?? I have about 250 miles on my 2012 Foreman 500, just noticed a slight ticking noise at idle. I have heard that people say it is the baffles in the muffler but i have a swamp XL series muffler on but still have the stock head pipe. I was just curious to see if you have found out the source of the knocking/ticking noise as of yet. mine is slight but noticable.

decompressor on the cam, its a normal aspect of the 2012 foreman, no essential problems so far.
