Default Front and Read Diff Oil Help

Hello,

I'm doing my first 500 mile service, and I'm changing front and rear diff fluid on my TRX500.

Question - Amsoil 10w-30 Motorcycle oil is rated for SAE80 Gear Oil - which is what the owners manual calls for in terms of front and rear diff (SAE80 Gear Oil).

Has anyone run this? I just feel weird putting in 10w-30 that's SAE80 rated.

Anyone else out there running this in the diffs?

Also - as a side note - when I drained the rear diff there was wayyyy too much fluid in it. No water in the oil that came out, but just too much of it (I bought it used and a shop had done the 100 mile service). Oil poured out of the check-hole for probably 15-20 seconds...just wondering if this would have damaged anything?

Thanks!

Ryan

I have never heard of anyone running that oil in the diff's before. I personally would stick with regular gear oil, also dont forget its gotta be hypoid gear oil. There shouldnt be too big of a deal with too much in the rear other than cold climate and hard riding can mess up seals. just fill it to the inspection bolt hole on the side, should be 2.5oz i believe. and front should be 6.3oz.

Anyone know the GL requirement for the diffs? The oil I got is rated for GL-1 / SAE 80...I'm thinking I might not do it again, but should be fine for the current service?

I use the Amsoil Marine Gear Lube SAE 75W/80W-90 (Amsoil product code AGM) in my ATV differentials WITHOUT wet brakes. My Suzuki King Quad HAS a wet brake system in the rear diff, and I use the Amsoil Tractor Hydraulic-Transmission Oil SAE 5W-30. (Amsoil product code ATH).

Read up on these products. I think you'll be well satisfied...

It should require a GL-5 or at least my Rancher does, just use Honda Shaftdrive. $5.95/pint, comes in a pointy bottle good for other tasks too.

I have used to Golden Spectro 80w90 GL-5 too.

But its only GL1 and that's for transmission, GL5 for the differential. TRUST ME, I know what I am talking about (dealerformanyears), DO NOT USE it in any differential, only for use in engine/transmission applications like your Hondamatic. I use the 10W-30 MCT in my Rincon.

Use the severe gear 75W-90. That's been in my 06 Rincon since new.

You can really use just about any AMSOIL gear lube in the differential but the rear I think has a limited slip type and the SVG 75W-90 would be the best IMO. 1 qts is more than enough to do both.

Quote:
AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 Motorcycle Oil is recommended for liquid- or air-cooled 4-stroke motorcycles, scooters, ATVs and UTVs requiring an SAE 10W-30 fluid. It meets SAE 80, API GL-1 gear oil requirements and is recommended for transmissions on both 4- and 2-stroke motorcycles. AMSOIL MCT is recommended for Honda®, Yamaha®, Suzuki® and Kawasaki® motorcycles and scooters, as well as Arctic Cat®, Can-Am®, Honda®, Kawasaki® and Suzuki® ATVs and UTVs. Not recommended where an API GL-4 or GL-5 gear oil is required.
