since I undertook this endeavor to learn about Winch's, I always keep seeing posts on every one of the different manufactures sites about Winch's getting hot especially with Amsteel rope.......whats the deal?
is it the Drum that gets hot or Motor? and is it better to run the line out a long ways for more power, if I read correctly you have more power with less line on the winch drum....it usually only takes a few feet to get somebody unstuck most of the time, not enough to over heat anything that I have experienced in the past year. any feedback is welcome Glide

I call bs on that ^^ A lot of guys up here have switched over to synthetic lines...no problems
me personally have not yet. Just like a toe rope...as it gets wet and dirty it will deteriate.... cable will not. The most efficient way to do your winch in operation is to use a pulley and double the pulling power. Their is a point where if you are using any winch for a long period of time it will get hot....the motor that is. In addition the more repeated use you use it the more it will take power out of your battery especially if you have your lights on. unless your using your winch for hours each day I would not worry about things.....if you are using it for hours each day.....then find another route around your mud holes....lol

Well WERE going to find out if it busts the Drum or not, if it does than EVERY winch maker on the market needs sued, something you could not prove unless you took video of every time you used your Winch.......not likely!
I am thinking Motor too but if you read on their sites it talks about the line can ( melt on the drum) I know things can get hot but if it gets hot enough to melt a line you need a bigger Winch period, or if your using it Constantly its just common since to let things cool down!.... well as I said this is an endeavor For me to Learn more & Share, So Ill put it to the Test!

It can MELT!? Now Ive heard of a mud bog from **** but.... melting your cable? That seems a little far fetched to me lol. If the winch got that hot to melt the rope then it would probably do some damage to the front plastic as well..... Yea it seems like they would have a pretty big law suit on their hands!

When my #4000 messed up it got hot, and I mean hot. So did my battery and the wiring. I wouldn't say the winch line (synthetic) melted but it was wound so tight it was a pain to get it back out. That winch was rebuilt (just the broken holders) and the same winch line is still used on it.
For those that don't know the story, I was riding through a pretty bad creak and my wheeler isn't exactly quiet. The contactor messed up and stuck on the winch in position and it pulled the winch off of the mount, breaking the holders. I didn't know anything was going on until I pulled up on a bank and the wheeler died, battery was completely dead and I was only running everything off of the stator. The low amperage everything was getting caused it to get very hot, plus the fact that the winch was pulling (or trying) and getting no where. |
