Not bad to do at all. First time will take around an hour I'm guessing. You have to remove the tank covers, fuel tank, and the plastic heat shield to get access to the top-end of the motor.

is this basically a maintainence procedure to return it to a stock setting or to tune it up for prime operating?

I can never get it top dead center. I get the "T" in the window but never on the right stroke.

Watch the valves as they open and close so you know what stroke it's on,also remove the sparkplug so it's easier to turn over.
I've found it runs much better and cooler at .003" than the recommended .006"

Its for doing both and best to do this every 600 miles

I just rebuilt an 08 and the flywheel has an "F" on it for the compression stroke.... Just thought I'd add this to advoid any confusion

should the feeler gauge slide in and out easily or should there be friction and be a little tougher to move in and out when gauging the gap?

You want to have a good drag, if the feeler gauge slides easily then there not set right
