problem with valve adjustment help

so i decided to try to adjust the valves on my 2006 foreman 500. i didnt look at instructions and took the valve cover off. once i realized that it can not be done without the valve cover on i put it back on and removed the two nuts. the valve clearance on both sides seemed to be in spec so i did not adjust them and put them back in and started it back up. now the bike seems to be bogging down and backfiring. it sounds like its not getting enough air or to much air like it has a vacuum leak. the only thing i did was take the fuel tank off and valve cover. there are four bolts on the valve cover that do not go through to the head and they have arrows next to them. i thought they had to come off but they did not. it looks like they are something to adjust the rockers. dont know what the problem could be. if anyone has any ideas please share. thank you.
