2006 Foreman 500 1st and 2nd out no worky

Just got this 500fm manual shift, it's farm fresh and been hammered on. Dude used it to pull dead cows on his ranch. 1st makes no attemp to move and no change from neutral, 2nd it rattles and grinds but no go. 3rd and up as well as reverse all work as they should. So experts, weigh in! I am really really hoping for a cracked/broken shift plate or a couple snapped off knobs on that star thing under front cover... can anyone else give me a good guess? really hope it isn't in the tranny as I don't want to pull the motor to fix it but can if I have to. anyone??

Requires total engine tear down.

Youtube video shows a 420 motor, which is very close to the one you have as far as the innards.
