I've used old springs from the brake shoes to pull the lever back on mine for a sticky cable. Just no point in fixing it in the summer months when it gets dunked every weekend. I just used a little wire to make the hook points but basically the same as what your using except yours is pushing instead of pulling.

u could also tie a rock to the rear rack an push it off when needed,or fred flintstone it! just pickin lol!

I'll research on posting larger pics. Basically it's a heavy spring surrounding cable between brake cam/lever and fron cable holder. Its a liitle stiff but I know I'm not dragging brake shoes off.
