Question Year to year changes/upgrades...

I'm looking to buy a used Honda Foreman this year, but have been out of touch with the "atv world" for about 15 years. I used to know every detail of every model year change for all the different 4x4 utility quads... but then life happened!

Anyway, I'll probably end up with a '98-'04 model and I'm wondering what changes occurred from year to year. Would also like to know if there were problem areas that affected certain years. I'm mainly interested in the base, manual-shift model, but would appreciate any insight about this Foreman generation. Opinions about the 2005 model are also welcome. I might be interested in the newer generation, unless there were "first run issues" that had to be worked out.

Thanks for the input,

welcome to the forum !
the 98-04 foreman 450 are tough little wheelers man !
the 98-01 are a full time 4x4
the 02-04 have track-loc (you can switch from 2x4 to 4x4 )
the good
there are a ton of aftermarket for the 450
parts on ebay are fairly cheep and avalible
the bad
some problems with 1st gear stripping out
if water gets in the rear axle tube it rusts the splines and strips the axle out

i realy like my 450 and cant see myself riding anything else.....good luck

stick with a honda and you cant go wrong, maybe im a little biased but it seriously is the only brand of atv that never made me walk home, and if you go with a 450 foreman you would be making a wise choice, when you look up the word tough in the dictionary you will see a picture of the 450 foreman! oh and welcome to the forum

Thanks for the Trak-Lok info. Is there any pattern of problems with that system? I've heard about expensive issues with the electric shift system, but nothing about Trak-Lok

I'd like to have the option to shift 2x4/4x4, but it might not be worth it if the '98-'01's are less prone to trouble.
