Default ESP Troublesooting Deadend?

Well I went through the troubleshooting steps to isolate my shift problem and it indicated a bad control unit.
After the swap I passed the voltage test to the shift motor (taken out, cleaned, checked, reinstalled) but I could still not shift electronically.

Something occurred to me after I left the 450ES - and this may be a dumb question - but does the motor have to be started for the control unit to reset or can it be done by keying the power on and off? I'm not around the 450 now to try it but it sure would be good to know that I have been messing up and could fix it quickly when I get back to it.

no the motor does NOT need to be running to shift but ......you will need to rock it back and forth to get it to shift .
have you adjusted the clutch ?
have you cleaned all the electrical conections and used dielectric grease ?

I know the motor does not need to be running to shift - but does the motor need to be running to reset the controller after it has gone into fault mode?
I can manually shift with the supplied lever.
All connectors have been separated, tested and had dielectric grease applied.
I have not adjusted the clutch - but like I said it is shifting manually.

i have seen lots of 450 and 500s ES not shift because the clutch isnt adjusted (thats why its #1 on the list in trouble shooting shifting proublems )

Question : Clutch adjustment and ES problems.

Can someone specifically explain how an unadjusted clutch may place the ESP in fail mode ? There are no electronics / sensors from it to the ESP controller ?

If I was guessing, I could say the extra "friction" causes more work for the shift motor and the electrical wire resistance kicks out the shift motor signal to the ECU ?

Any more thoughts ? I just want to know the technical reason why versus "The manual says to check the clutch adjustment".

what is so hard about adjusting the clutch ? if the shift motor has a lot of resistence because the clutch is out of adjustment it cant move all the shift parts .the shift motor isnt very strong
