Default 450ES Reverse Wont Work

Looking for some help.

My 2001 450ES wont shift into reverse without the manual shift. I've cleaned the angle sensor and the reverse connection (red plug under the gas tank) and I've also installed a new battery which seemed to help for a day.
The electric shift now works for reverse maybe one in 20 times, but I can shift from 1 to 5 without any problems.

Any suggestions?

Make sure the reverse lockout cable is pulling the reverse lockout lever up enough. The lever is on the rear of the engine near the bottom. It might not be pulling the lever up far enough, causing it to just shift into reverse, sometimes.

Thanks
I'm assuming that the cable is working OK as I have to use it with the manual shift bar. I never have a problem doing this. I have played with the adjustments a bit just to be sure.

I actually had this problem last year, but after I cleaned the red connector it was OK. I'm wondering if I need a new angle sensor?

You need to check the switch on the left lever with an ohm meter to see if it's working.

Guess I'll either have to pick up a meter or take it to a mechanic. I just replaced the angle sensor. Figured it was the one last thing I could do myself (and the dealer said that 9 times out of 10 this is the problem). It didn't fix the problem and I'm out $100.

If it's any kind of clue it also takes a while to shift from 2nd to third. I have to drive for a few minutes before it'll shift.

It did shift into reverse one out of the 10 or so times I tried after replacing the sensor.

Have you tried adjusting the clutch. I would go get a multimeter and test the switch and check the charging system on the machine. When running it should read 13-14 volts at the battery.

You can pick up a good enough multimeter for around $20 and they are handy to have around when testing vehicles and household things.

I will. Thanks

I made some small incremental adjustments to the reverse cable and eventually got it working through the ES. Still seems a little touchy as it takes a few tries. I expect the angle sensor was still bad as I tried this with the old one several times and got no results.

Think I should get hold of a multimeter and a repair manual as well. Do you have a manual available (I don't mind paying or upgrading my membership if necessary)

Appreciate your and Helmut's help.
