A couple of weeks a ago I had a stripped head bolt since I bought it and pulled the jug and heli-coiled the hold in the case.
Now I hear my valves ticking again take off the valve cover to readjust the valves and notice the back most bolt under the valve cover (near the carb) is stripped!!! I can't even torque it to 15 ft-lbs with my torque wrench. The guy before me must have torqued the mess out of them. I guess this is why I was getting the valve train noise. Anyone have good luck with a reasonably priced torque wrench? If so let me know, maybe something is screwed up on mine. I mean they are supposed to be torqued to 29 ft-lbs, right? Is the craftsman or kobalt torque wrench good? Thanks. |

I'm a big fan of the craftsman inch-pound wrench I just bought. I think it does something like 24-260 inch pounds. Cost $59.99 @ Sears. Same price for ft lb wrench I believe. The lowest the ft pound wrench does is 10 lbs, which is too much for some stuff on the 500s.

The problem is probably not with your torque wrench but it wouldn't be a bad idea to have it calibrated if you've had it awhile. You can usually have this done for less than $25. It's worth the peace of mind.
Also, make sure you store it at it's lowest setting and avoid the upper and lower 10% of it's range. If you've stored it above it's lowest setting, had a few hard drops, used it to break bolts loose, torqued beyond the "click" or simply use the crap out of it, you should have it calibrated. Once you've had it calibrated, it's like having a new torque wrench. If it falls out at calibration, you'll be thankful you got rid of it.

(long one between valves) and i payed about 80 for it, it was digital and all and i ended up going to harbor frieght tools and buyin a cheap 3/8s manual set one. it works better than the craftsman!
